Australia welcomes international drivers. Your overseas licence is legally valid for driving in Australia, as long as it's current and you meet the state's requirements. Most rental companies, including Vamo, regularly rent to visitors from all over the world.
English Language Licences
If your licence is issued in English (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, etc.), you can use it directly. No additional documents are required, though carrying your passport is recommended for identification.
Non-English Licences
If your licence is not in English, you'll need either an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official English translation from a certified translator. The IDP is easier — get it from your home country before travelling.
Do I Need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An IDP is a translation of your licence into multiple languages. It's not a separate licence — you must carry your original licence with it. IDPs are issued by motoring organisations in your home country (like AAA in the USA or AA in the UK) and typically cost $15-30.
When You Need an IDP
You need an IDP if your licence is not in English. Countries like Japan, China, Korea, Brazil, France, Germany, and most non-English speaking countries require you to have an IDP or translation.
When You Don't Need an IDP
English-language licences from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and similar countries don't need an IDP. However, some rental companies may still request one — it's worth checking ahead.
How Long Can I Drive on an Overseas Licence?
In Queensland, you can drive on your overseas licence for up to 3 months as a visitor. If you become a Queensland resident (living here for more than 3 months), you'll need to get a Queensland licence. For most working holiday makers, the 3-month rule resets when you leave and re-enter the country.
What Rental Companies Look For

Queensland-Specific Rules for International Drivers
Queensland follows Australian federal guidelines but has some specific requirements. You must carry your original licence (not a photocopy) at all times while driving. The 3-month driving period applies from your most recent entry into Australia, and you must follow all Queensland road rules including speed limits, blood alcohol limits (0.05%), and seatbelt laws.
